REPORT ON NACCC
|
A committee consisting of select members of Union Congregational Church
attended the annual meeting of the National Association of
Congregational Christian Churches in Providence, R.I. on June 28, 2004
to consider possible affiliation for Union Congregational Church. The committee
met with the Association's Executive Secretary, Dr. Thomas M. Richard,
and other officers to learn about its services and philosophy and
attended meetings of key committees.
Services of the NACCC to member congregations include assistance with local church development, with pastoral search, with missions, and with various church activities such as Sunday School, retreats, youth ministries, etc. The Association also provides retirement, long-term disability, and life insurance plans for employees of member churches. It was the considered opinion of this committee that UCC should consider membership in the National Association. The chief reason the committee came to this view is that the Association, unlike the United Church of Christ, to which we presently belong, does not take positions on current social issues independent of its membership. Rather, consistent with the basic philosophy of Congregationalism, it respects the independence and autonomy of local congregations. We decided to provide information about affiliation to our membership. This was done in a brief report presented by Carolyn Marks to a meeting of the congregational membership on August 15, 2004. There was some discussion of the issue at that time. It was anticipated that the matter could be voted upon at a meeting of the UCC membership.
